Pascal Bruckner Has Marriage for Love Failed?

Today we like to think that marriage is a free choice based on love: that we freely choose whom to marry and that we do so, not so much for survival or social advantage, but for love. The invention of marriage for love inverted the old relationship between love and marriage. In the past, marriage was sacred, and love, if it existed at all, was a consequence of marriage; today, love is sacred and marriage is secondary. But now marriage appears to be becoming increasingly superfluous. For the past forty years or so, the number of weddings has been declining, the number of divorces exploding and the number of unmarried individuals and couples growing, while single-parent families are becoming more numerous. Love has triumphed over marriage but now it is destroying it from inside. So has the ideal of marriage for love failed, and has love finally been liberated from the shackles of marriage? In this brilliant and provocative book Pascal Bruckner argues that the old tension between love and marriage has not been resolved in favour of love, it has simply been displaced onto other levels. Even if it seems more straightforward, the contemporary landscape of love is far from euphoric: as in the past, infidelity, loss and betrayal are central to the plots of modern love, and the disenchantment is all the greater because marriages are voluntary and not imposed. But the collapse of the ideal of marriage for love is not necessarily a cause for remorse, because it demonstrates that love retains its subversive power. Love is not a glue to be put in the service of the institution of marriage: it is an explosive that blows up in our faces, dynamite pure and simple.

Jiddu Krishnamurti At The Feet Of Master -

The privilege is given to me, as an elder, to pen a word of introduction to this little book, the first written by a younger Brother, young in body verily, but not in Soul. The teachings contained in it were given to him by his Master in preparing him for Initiation, and were written down by him from memory - slowly and laboriously, for his English last year was far less fluent than it is now. The greater part is a reproduction of the Master's own words; that which is not such a verbal reproduction is the Master's thought clothed in His pupil's words. Two omitted sentences were supplied by the Master. In two other cases an omitted word has been added. Beyond this, it is entirely Alcyone's own, his first gift to the world. May it help others as the spoken teachings helped him - such is the hope with which he gives it. But the teaching can only be fruitful if it is lived, as he has lived it, since it fell from the Master's lips. If the example be followed as well as the precept, then for the reader, as for the writer, shall the great Portal swing open, and his feet be set on the Path. Annie Besant.

Marriage, a History

Just when the clamor over "traditional" marriage couldn’t get any louder, along comes this groundbreaking book to ask, "What tradition?" In Marriage, a History, historian and marriage expert Stephanie Coontz takes readers from the marital intrigues of ancient Babylon to the torments of Victorian lovers to demonstrate how recent the idea of marrying for love is—and how absurd it would have seemed to most of our ancestors. It was when marriage moved into the emotional sphere in the nineteenth century, she argues, that it suffered as an institution just as it began to thrive as a personal relationship. This enlightening and hugely entertaining book brings intelligence, perspective, and wit to today’s marital debate.

Laurence Joseph Murphy Annie Bags. The Lady in Rags

This is a work of fiction that is informally based on a real person, Annie Ferdinand. Annie is believed to have been born into a noble family in Prussia in 1851. Her mother died when she was very young, a loss that affected both her and her father significantly and she travelled to London, England with him to support him while he negotiated the return of his estate, which had been seized by the French during the Franco-Prussian war. Annie was devoted to her father, but yearned for the company of someone who would love her as much as her father loved and cherished the memory of her mother. She met and fell in love with a well-bred Englishman, James Pottingley, but her happiness was short-lived for events conspired to separate them. Annie refused to believe that James had left her intentionally and she set out to find him, a journey that took her to some of the most inhospitable regions of Australia. She wavered between optimism and despair, fighting her own personal demons as she faced the physical and mental hardships that she encountered along the way. This is the story of her search, its awful conclusion and the reason she became known as the legendary Annie Bags.

Desmond Thomas Marriage Made in Heaven

Have the business of daily life, the pressures from the world around us for Christian marriage to be “modernized” and the terrible decadence of this twenty-first century threatened your concept and practice of traditional Christian marriage? In days like these, we need to constantly remind ourselves and challenge ourselves with biblical concepts. Everything God made is “good,” including marriage, if it is done according to His divine prescription. Marriage becomes a “wreck” only if God’s principles are violated or distorted. Isn’t it time that we understood marriage as Heaven intended it to be?Apart from laying down the biblical foundations for Christian marriage, this book also exposes the things that can build a marriage and those that can break one. Love is not blind. Love illuminates you. Love teaches you to make wise decisions and to plan a marriage that is not only enduring, but also full of happiness and fun for both parties. With his depth of experience as a happily married man and as a pastor and marriage counselor, Desmond Thomas challenges the current religious and cultural concepts concerning marriage, and, in the light of the Scriptures, teaches us how to choose right, plan right and live right within the context of Christian marriage. His years of experience in marriage and in marriage counselling as a pastor on four continents has been put into this book. These teachings will empower you to build a strong covenanted marriage, based on giving each other pleasure ...

Jiddu Krishnamurti Life In Freedom. and The Dissolution of the Order Star

Jiddu Krishnamurti was one of the greatest spiritual teachers of modern times. While very young he was seen as something special so he and his brother were adopted by Annie Besant of the Theosophical Society and brought to England in 1911. He was groomed to be the next World Teacher, which Theosophists had been predicting would come. A worldwide organization was created around him called The Order of the Star of the East, which became enormously popular. In 1927 he was officially recognized by the group as being the World Teacher, but was not comfortable in this role. He was a man of great wisdom by this time—one whose ego did not need validation from this role; nor did he believe that he could “save” others, as was often being asked of him. This book is a collection of talks from 1928. They impart useful wisdom to the listener/reader, rather than create a dependency on him. These talks often contradict the expectations of him, and instead provide the reader with tools to live a “Life In Freedom.” It was something he sought as well. In 1929, shortly after this book came out, Krishnamurti renounced his role and dissolved The Order of the Star. He returned all the property and money that had come with his position and left with nothing—except Freedom. A rare, 14-page announcement, The Dissolution of the Order of the Star, was distributed to his followers. It is included here as an addendum, which allows this book to be seen in a better context. Krishnamurti was in fact a great ...
